Dr Nicholas Groom, Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Birmingham, UK, has been appointed as a Guest Professor of English at the Centre of Academic Writing and the Department of English Studies within the Institute of Foreign Languages and Cultures as of January 2025.
With a research portfolio that spans phraseology, corpus linguistics, discourse analysis, and English for Academic Purposes, Dr. Groom brings a wealth of expertise to this new role.
Dr Groom’s connection to the University of Tartu began in 2010 when he served as the external supervisor for Djuddah A.J. Leijen’s PhD project. He further contributed to the Bwrite project (2020–2023) as an external expert, focusing on advancing our understanding of Estonian academic writing and means to measure written texts through various analytical approaches. His research, which investigates the relationship between phraseology and epistemology in academic writing and examines the impact of AI in academic contexts, aligns closely with the Centre’s academic and research objectives.
During his tenure at the University of Tartu, Dr. Groom will participate in teaching, supervision, and engaging in research collaboration. He will also lead seminars and workshops on contemporary topics such as corpus-based discourse analysis and the integration of AI in academic writing, strengthening academic ties between the University of Tartu and the University of Birmingham.
